Border with figure with stave 1935.32.0200ab
The motif consists of a standing figure (lying lengthways in the border), with a very large, ornate headdress, 2 legs with opposable primate-like thumbs on the feet, a clothed tail on one side of the body and holding a staff on the other side. There are 6 colourways of the figure, lying in the same direction but turned to the right and left alternately along the border.
MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUE
Two borders, where the ground fabric has suffered extensive damage and as good as completely corroded away. The embroidered stitches are almost free floating, which means the way they were sewn is clearly visible. Warp and weft are missing, but could have been of cotton. Embroidery: camelid fibre in black, mid-purple, pink, mid-yellow, yellow, red, blue, light blue and brown. Technique: the embroidery is in a variation of the block colour – linear style.
